Pastel on handmade paper

Matthew Draper is interested and influenced by the dramatic imagery of the late eighteenth and nineteenth century. Landscapes in the romantic spirit echoing the works of Casper David Friedrich. Principally a draughtsman working mainly in pastel, his unique approach to either landscape or cityscape involves a direct search for light amongst familiar surroundings. Large scale pastels almost in the abstract until the eye settles on something reassuring that unlocks our understanding of it.
